What Is a LAMS Shelter?

A Large Area Maintenance Shelter (LAMS) is a deployable aircraft maintenance structure used by the US Air Force, Army, Navy, and allied military forces worldwide. Built on a Clamshell Building System 50 metal frame, the LAMS is designed to be transported, erected rapidly in the field, and taken down and redeployed as mission requirements change.

The fabric envelope — the weathershell — is the critical component that makes the LAMS functional. It must seal against wind, rain, and dust; withstand UV exposure over years of service; and be field-repairable when damaged. APPF fabricates these panels using the same RF welding and industrial sewing processes used in the original structures.

APPF is one of the few US manufacturers with the large-format RF welding equipment and industrial sewing capacity to produce LAMS panels at scale. We fabricate replacement panels for aging shelters and complete new assemblies for new construction — to MIL-SPEC, Berry Amendment compliant, and ITAR registered.

Shelter Types APPF Fabricates Panels For

From standard LAMS to VLAM, Predator shelters, and forward operating base structures — APPF fabricates panels for the full range of military aircraft maintenance shelter configurations.

LAMS — Large Area Maintenance Shelter

The standard US military aircraft maintenance shelter. LAMS structures use a Clamshell Building System 50 frame with a fabric envelope designed for rapid erection and takedown. APPF fabricates the full fabric weathershell — side panels, end walls, door panels, and ridge sections — to MIL-SPEC.

  • Fixed-wing aircraft maintenance (F-16, A-10, C-130)
  • Rotary-wing maintenance (UH-60, CH-47, AH-64)
  • CONUS and OCONUS air bases
  • Rapid deployment and expeditionary operations

VLAM — Very Large Area Maintenance Shelter

The VLAM is an expanded-bay variant of the LAMS, designed for larger aircraft or multi-aircraft maintenance operations. APPF fabricates VLAM panels to the same MIL-SPEC standards as standard LAMS, with the additional scale requirements these structures demand.

  • Wide-body and heavy-lift aircraft (C-17, C-5, KC-135)
  • Multi-aircraft simultaneous maintenance
  • Large UAV/drone maintenance facilities
  • Allied nation military programs (FMS)

Predator / UAV Shelters

Dedicated fabric shelters for unmanned aerial vehicle maintenance and storage. APPF fabricates panels for UAV-specific Clamshell Building configurations, including the MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper shelter systems used at forward operating bases.

  • MQ-1 Predator maintenance shelters
  • MQ-9 Reaper and Gray Eagle shelters
  • Forward operating base UAV facilities
  • Expeditionary drone operations

Forward Operating Base (FOB) Shelters

Deployable fabric shelters for forward operating bases require panels that can be transported, erected quickly, and withstand harsh environmental conditions. APPF's panels are fabricated for field durability — UV-stabilized, field-repairable, and built to survive the conditions of deployed operations.

  • Rapid-erect aircraft protection
  • Equipment and vehicle maintenance
  • OCONUS and expeditionary deployments
  • Allied and coalition force programs

Manufacturing Process

LAMS panels are fabricated using the same two processes used in the original structures: RF welding and industrial sewing. RF welding creates airtight, watertight seams in PVC and coated fabrics at the molecular level — bonds that are often stronger than the base material. Industrial sewing provides structural reinforcement at load points, attachment hardware, and perimeter edges.

APPF operates Forsstrom RF welding machines and computer-driven ZUND cutting equipment — the same class of equipment used by original Clamshell Building panel manufacturers. This is not a capability most fabric shops have. It is why APPF is one of the few US sources for large-format LAMS panels.

All panels are fabricated with full traceability and documentation to support military quality requirements. We work from customer-supplied drawings and specifications, or we can develop specifications from existing panels.
